Cannabis Access Expands as Repeal Battle Escalates

Kentucky expanded medical cannabis access across its entire licensing map, while a bipartisan group of Massachusetts lawmakers raised the political stakes in that state’s cannabis repeal campaign. The weekend box office also produced an unusual success story for documentary filmmaking, with A24’s latest nonfiction release outperforming several wide-release competitors.

Kentucky Opens Medical Cannabis Dispensaries in All 11 Licensing Regions

Medical cannabis is now available in every Kentucky dispensary licensing region following the opening of Sunnyside Dispensary in Prestonsburg, according to Gov. Andy Beshear’s office. The Floyd County location, which began operating October 12, is the first dispensary serving the state’s Mountain Region.

Kentucky now has 26 operating dispensary facilities and 46 medical cannabis businesses open across the supply chain. The state also reports that more than 28,000 residents have been approved for medical cannabis cards and more than 500 practitioners have registered with the program.

Why It Matters: Analysis: Establishing retail access in every licensing region moves Kentucky beyond the initial market-launch phase and creates a broader commercial base for cultivators, processors, laboratories and dispensary operators. Patient enrollment and product availability will now be important measures of whether the geographically distributed licensing model can support a sustainable market.

Massachusetts Legislative Leaders Join Campaign Against Cannabis Repeal

A bipartisan group of 62 Massachusetts lawmakers publicly urged voters to reject Question 8, the November 3 ballot proposal that would eliminate the state’s licensed adult-use cannabis market. The group includes House Speaker Ronald Mariano and Senate President Karen Spilka.

The measure would end regulated recreational sales and home cultivation while retaining the medical cannabis program and limited legal possession. The lawmakers’ announcement represents a significant escalation in organized political opposition as voting approaches.

Why It Matters: Analysis: Public opposition from both legislative chambers’ leaders gives licensed operators stronger institutional support, although it does not alter the ballot measure or remove the underlying risk. A successful repeal would disrupt retailers, suppliers, employees, landlords and municipalities with financial exposure to the existing regulated market.

A24 Documentary Breaks Out as Street Fighter Leads the Box Office

Paramount, Legendary and Capcom’s Street Fighter was projected to lead the domestic weekend with approximately $31 million after earning $12.5 million on its opening day, including previews. The video-game adaptation was released in 3,575 theaters and carries a reported production budget of $82 million.

The weekend’s surprise was A24’s You Can See Everything, the Elizabeth Holmes documentary directed by Lance Oppenheim and Nathan Fielder. The film was projected to earn about $12.5 million from only 855 screens, with A24 reporting more than 1,300 sold-out screenings by Saturday morning. That pace would give it the strongest documentary opening since at least 2013.

Why It Matters: Analysis: The documentary’s performance demonstrates that concentrated marketing, cultural interest and event-style screenings can still generate meaningful theatrical demand for nonfiction releases. Street Fighter’s more conventional franchise launch will depend heavily on international revenue and audience retention because of its substantially larger budget.

What We’re Watching

Colorado lawmakers are scheduled to review a statewide marijuana consumer-safety performance audit on October 19, while the DEA faces an October 21 deadline to respond to opponents seeking additional testimony and discovery in the stayed federal rescheduling proceeding. Final weekend box-office totals will also show whether the documentary breakout exceeded Saturday’s projections.
